One Third of Paradise
Adjudicating Committee verdict:
Julietta Harvey’s One Third of Paradise is an exquisitely written, elegiac novel about family, memory, loss and growing old. Set in Thessaloniki, the book draws on the melancholy atmosphere of a city steeped in a history of migration and displacement to tell its personal story of an ageing father and his three daughters. Harvey’s careful detailed and precisely minute attention to the subtle emotional pushes and pulls of family relations allows the novel, by its conclusion, to take on the weight and resonance of the great tragic tradition, from the Greeks to Shakespeare.
